The Agricultural Extension and Communication Study Program (Penyuluhan dan Komunikasi Pertanian/PKP), Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research (WUR), organized the Mini Seminar: Climate Change and Farmers’ Adaptation on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. Held at the Venture Room, 6th Floor, AGLC Building, the seminar was attended by participants both in person and online.
The mini seminar served as a forum for exchanging perspectives and research insights on climate change and farmers’ adaptation. Conducted in English, the event brought together academics from the Faculty of Agriculture UGM and WUR to discuss climate change, its impacts on the agricultural sector, and various forms of adaptation in response to changing environmental conditions.
The seminar was divided into two main panels. The first panel, Climate Change, featured Andi Syahid Muttaqin, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D., Dr. Samuel Jonson Sutanto, Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Maulana, S.Hut., M.Sc., and Prof. Dr. Ir. Siti Subandiyah, M.Agr.Sc. The session discussed the current state of climate change, factors associated with climate change, and its impacts on the agricultural sector. The discussion also connected climate change with pathogens in the agricultural context, providing a broader perspective on the complex challenges facing agriculture amid changing climatic conditions.

The second panel, Farmers’ Adaptation, featured Prof. Subejo, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., Dr. Dyah Woro Untari, S.P., M.P., dr.ir. JA (Alex) Bolding, and Mesalia Kriska, S.P., M.Sc. The session explored farmers’ adaptation from various perspectives, including the role of irrigation institutions in supporting agricultural systems and helping farmers manage water resources. This perspective was complemented by a closer look at how irrigation water is used and managed by farmers at the local level, particularly in Sleman.

The discussion further highlighted that farmers’ adaptation is shaped not only by environmental conditions but also by water governance, institutions, and farmers’ own practices. The session also brought attention to the role and agency of women within agricultural communities, providing a broader understanding of the factors that shape adaptive capacity at the community level.

The two panels were moderated by two lecturers from the Agricultural Extension and Communication Study Program, Dr. Ishadiyanto Salim, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Dr. Najmu Tsaqib Akhda, S.P., M.A. The participation of six lecturers from the Faculty of Agriculture UGM and two speakers from WUR, Dr. Samuel Jonson Sutanto and dr.ir. JA (Alex) Bolding, brought together academic perspectives from both institutions in discussing climate change and farmers’ adaptation.

Through this event, PKP UGM and WUR provided a platform for exchanging knowledge and academic perspectives on climate-related challenges and adaptation responses in the agricultural sector. By connecting environmental aspects, water resource management, institutions, farmers’ practices, and women’s roles, the discussion highlighted the multidimensional nature of climate change adaptation and the importance of considering diverse perspectives.
The Mini Seminar: Climate Change and Farmers’ Adaptation also contributed to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The discussion on climate change and farmers’ adaptation supports SDG 2: Zero hunger, particularly in relation to agricultural sustainability. The event also directly relates to SDG 13: Climate action through its focus on climate change and responses to its impacts. Meanwhile, the collaboration between PKP UGM and WUR reflects SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals, particularly through strengthening institutional partnerships and knowledge exchange.
