Rosalia Natalia Seleky, Ph.D., commonly called Rosa Sensei, is an alumna of the Department of Agricultural Socioeconomics, Gadjah Mada University, class of 2011. Her study struggle has led her to explore the world of education until she is now an Assistant Professor (Young Lecturer) at Shimane University, Japan. From the start, Rosa showed interest in the socio-economic field. Still, because she had a background in Mathematics and Natural Sciences in high school, Rosa finally looked for a major in the Science and Technology group that suited her interests. This led him to embark on an academic journey in the Department of Agribusiness, Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University, which ultimately opened the way to exploring knowledge in different parts of the world.

Rosa Sensei’s unique experiences are not only limited to the classroom but also cross national borders. From rice fields and villages in Indonesia to fields in Japan, he studied theory and was directly involved in field activities. This experience formed a deep understanding of local wisdom and the challenges faced by farmers in various countries.

Rosa Sensei’s journey was not without its challenges. Like many other alumni, she experienced uncertainty and anxiety after graduating. While her friends were securing jobs with stable salaries, Rosa was still applying for scholarships and assisting lecturers’ projects on campus. She also faced language barriers, feeling inadequate in both English and Japanese. However, with unwavering determination and the support of her environment, she overcame these obstacles and continued her academic journey to the doctoral level.

Rosa Sensei said:
If you feel like you’re falling behind, it’s okay. Just take a day to take a rest. There is no need to rush because each of us has his own time.

果報は寝て待て
Good things come to those who wait…

Rosa Sensei’s achievements extend beyond her personal success. She has a profound vision of her role in sustainable agricultural development. Her focus on developing farmer groups and promoting farmer regeneration not only aligns with global trends but also has a significant impact on agriculture in Indonesia. Rosa Sensei’s journey is a testament to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including poverty alleviation, food security, quality education, decent work, and economic growth. Her academic journey and commitment to creating sustainable change serve as an inspiring example for students and alumni of the Department of Agricultural Socioeconomics. Her passion and dedication remind us that every struggle holds value and that every dream can be realized with perseverance and tenacity.
