On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, lecturers from the Department of Agricultural Socio-Economics, Faculty of Agriculture, UGM, conducted a community service activity at the Pusat Pelatihan Pertanian dan Perdesaan Swadaya (P4S) Tani Merbabu, Ngablak, Magelang. This activity, themed “Training on Digital Farming Recordkeeping and Stacked Buckets for Composting,” aimed to provide farmers with new knowledge and skills in digitally recording their farming activities and utilizing simple technology for composting.
The event was led by lecturers from the Department of Agricultural Socio-Economics, including Dr. Hani Perwitasari, S.P., M.Sc., and Arif Wahyu Widada, S.P., M.Sc., along with lecturers from the Department of Soil Science, Andi Syahid Muttaqin, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D., and Nasih Widya Yuwono, S.P., M.P. The training was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from participants. The local community was enthusiastic about each session, particularly in learning about efficient digital recordkeeping methods and composting techniques using stacked buckets, which can be easily adopted in their surroundings.
This community service not only focused on enhancing individual capacities but also directly contributed to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Firstly, it supports SDG 2, “Zero Hunger,” by helping farmers improve productivity and efficiency through better farming recordkeeping. Secondly, the program aligns with SDG 12, “Responsible Consumption and Production,” by teaching organic waste management techniques to create compost, thereby promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Lastly, this initiative is relevant to SDG 4, “Quality Education,” as it provides valuable education and training to the village community, potentially improving their overall well-being.
With the success of this training, it is hoped that the local community will continue to develop the new skills they have acquired and apply them in their daily lives, ultimately improving the quality of their agriculture and environment.
