Yogyakarta, 11 September 2025 – The Department of Agricultural Socio-Economics (Sosek), Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), has demonstrated its commitment to advancing organic agriculture through active participation in the 3rd International Conference on Organic Agriculture in the Tropics (Orgatrop), organized by the Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, UGM. Held from 1–4 September 2025, this prestigious event served as a vital platform for academics, practitioners, policymakers, and farmers from various countries to exchange ideas, experiences, and innovations amid global changes. Under the theme “Exploring Challenges and Opportunities in The Era of Global Change”, the conference highlighted various sub-topics, including organic farming production systems, policy and regulation, socio-economic aspects, technological innovations, and the contributions of organic agriculture to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Orgatrop 2025 conference was conducted in a hybrid format in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, with the main sessions held from the first to the third day at Santika Premiere Hotel. On the fourth day, participants continued with a field trip to APPOLI in Boyolali Regency to observe organic farming practices firsthand, followed by a visit to Prambanan Temple, which was enlivened by a Ramayana dance performance. The Department of Sosek UGM played a prominent role, with several lecturers and students participating as moderators, speakers, and attendees. Notably, during the plenary session on the third day (3 September 2025), Prof. Dr. Ir. Irham, M.Sc., delivered a keynote speech on the socio-economic aspects of organic agriculture, while Arini Wahyu Utami, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., effectively moderated the discussion.

The conference also marked a proud moment for the Department of Sosek UGM, as one of its fast-track program students, Ulin Nuha Diah Wulandari, S.P., received the Best Presenter award in the field of Technology Innovation in Organic Agriculture, showcasing the high quality of research from young scholars. The complete list of participants from the Department of Sosek includes the following lecturers: Dr. Dyah Woro Untari, S.P., M.P.; Dr. Hani Perwitasari, S.P., M.Sc.; Prof. Subejo, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D.; Hariyani Dwi Anjani, S.P., M.Sc.; Dr.agr. Ir. Sri Peni Wastutiningsih; Prof. Dr. Ir. Irham, M.Sc.; Dr. Ir. Lestari Rahayu Waluyati, M.P.; Ir. Any Suryantini, MM., Ph.D.; Alia Bihrajihant Raya, S.P., M.P., Ph.D.; and Azizatun Nurhayati, S.P., M.Sc. Additionally, the participating students and alumni included Tyas Niswatun Sa’idah, S.P.; Ulin Nuha Diah Wulandari, S.P.; Nari Nawang Purbamdala, S.P.; Ferliana Ernita Putri, S.P.; Sugesti Dwi Aprilia, S.P.; Lidia Tri Aisyah, S.P.; Savrina Tanjung Prabandari, S.P.; and Anila Indriati, S.P.

The core objective of the third Orgatrop was to serve as a platform for exchanging ideas and innovations in organic agriculture, generating concrete solutions to global challenges such as food security, climate change, and sustainable development. Through cross-sector collaboration—spanning academics to farmers—the conference aimed to strengthen organic farming practices globally while supporting the achievement of sustainable development goals. This event is highly relevant to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

SDG 2 (Zero Hunger): Focusing on enhancing food security through environmentally friendly farming practices.

SDG 13 (Climate Action): Emphasizing strategies for climate change adaptation and mitigation in the agricultural sector.

SDG 15 (Life on Land): Promoting sustainable land management to protect ecosystems and biodiversity.

The participation of the Department of Sosek UGM in Orgatrop 2025 not only enriched the knowledge of its participants but also reinforced UGM’s position as a center of excellence in agricultural socio-economic studies. This event is expected to serve as a catalyst for further collaboration, both nationally and internationally, to realize a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural future.
