A team of students from the Department of Agricultural Socio-Economics, Faculty of Agriculture, UGM, has once again made a remarkable achievement on the national stage. The team, consisting of Sarah Dear Hanny Damanik (Agricultural Extension and Communication Study Program 2022), Lalita Ammaranggana (Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Study Program 2022), and Fadhlurrahman Zain Lubis (Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Study Program 2022), secured the Silver Medal in the Diponegoro Science Competition 2024, organized by the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM), Universitas Diponegoro.
Their innovative project, titled “Her-ReLeaf Community: Supporting the Application of Work-Life Balance for Housewives through the Concept of Urban Farming in Yogyakarta”, impressed the judges. The project focuses on empowering housewives by introducing urban farming practices, helping them balance their work and family lives. Additionally, the project promotes local food security and contributes to the development of green spaces in urban areas.
The competition, which attracted participants from various universities, revolved around the theme “Implementing Science, Technology, and Humanities on an Industrial Scale with Nature-Based Solutions to Achieve the 3P Goals (People, Planet, and Prosperity) within the Framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” The event ran from the registration phase on May 28, 2024, culminating in the final presentations and awarding ceremony on October 5, 2024, held at the BPSDMD Universitas Diponegoro.
The success of the UGM team is closely aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – The urban farming initiative promotes both physical and mental health by offering housewives an activity that supports work-life balance.
- SDG 5: Gender Equality – This project empowers women, especially housewives, by involving them in productive activities that enhance family and community well-being.
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – By applying urban farming concepts, the project contributes to building greener, more sustainable urban environments.
This achievement highlights the dedication of UGM Agricultural Socio-Economics students in developing innovative solutions to address contemporary socio-economic and environmental challenges. It is hoped that this success will inspire other students to continue excelling and contributing to sustainable development in Indonesia.
