From August 12-15, 2024, students from the 23rd batch of the Master of Agricultural Economics (MEP) program at the Department of Agricultural Socioeconomics, Faculty of Agriculture, UGM, conducted a study tour (widyakarya) to Malaysia. This activity was part of a mandatory course aimed at broadening students’ perspectives by visiting prominent institutions in Malaysia, such as the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Beryl’s, and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI).

During the four-day visit, the students were accompanied by two senior lecturers, Prof. Dr. Ir. Irham, M.Sc., and Dr. Hani Perwitasari, S.P., M.Sc. The visit to MPOB, renowned for its research and development in the palm oil industry, provided in-depth insights into how Malaysia manages this commodity with a sustainable approach. At Beryl’s, students learned about the chocolate processing industry based on local products but with international competitiveness. Meanwhile, at MARDI, the students gained knowledge about various agricultural innovations supporting Malaysia’s national food security.

This activity not only enriched the students’ knowledge but also provided valuable experience in managing and innovating a sustainable agricultural sector. This aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), emphasizing the importance of food security, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), focusing on the development of technology-based industries and innovation, and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), highlighting the importance of sustainable production and consumption practices.

This widyakarya is expected to contribute positively to the development of MEP students’ knowledge, while also strengthening academic relations between UGM and institutions in Malaysia. The hands-on learning experience in the field is sure to be a cherished memory for all participants.
