Lecturers from the Department of Agricultural Socioeconomics, Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), also contributed to the prestigious international event, the 10th World Water Forum (WWF), in Bali on 18-25 May 2024. This global meeting forum aims to discuss critical issues related to water, such as water resource management, access to clean water, sanitation, etc. With the theme “Water for Shared Prosperity,” this edition of WWF brings together global participation, knowledge exchange, innovative technology exhibitions, and a shared commitment to sustainable water solutions.
During the eight days of implementation, this forum held various activities, including panel discussions, workshops, technology exhibitions for innovative solutions for water and sanitation management, and community and networking forums. One other important event is Youth Water Sustainability which is designed to involve young people in global efforts to conserve water resources. WWF was attended by various important and influential figures worldwide, including two lecturers from the Department of Agricultural Socioeconomics UGM who made significant contributions.
Prof. Subejo, S.P., M.Sc. present as one of the academics who presented the irrigation system for shallot farmers in Nawungan, Bantul. This presentation provides an opportunity for discussions and case studies regarding mitigation and management of water-related disasters and increasing awareness and capacity building for participants. Prof. Subejo shared experiences and innovations in water management implemented in the area, providing valuable insights for forum participants.
Apart from that, Diah Fitria Widhiningsih, S.P., M.Sc. participated in the Youth Water Sustainability event by bringing an innovation entitled “Fostering Water Conservation Awareness among Gen Z through Social Learning: Insight from The Mini T-ReKS Initiative in Yogyakarta, Indonesia”. The Mini T-ReKS initiative presented by Miss Fitri emphasized the importance of developing soft skills such as creative thinking, leadership, communication and teamwork among children and Gen-Z to support water conservation. By competing among 1000 participants from various parts of the world, Miss Fitri succeeded in becoming first winner, bringing pride to UGM and Indonesia.
The contributions of these lecturers not only emphasize the important role of higher education in global efforts to conserve water resources, but are also in line with the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which include ensuring the availability and sustainable management of clean water and sanitation for all. Through this activity, UGM is committed to supporting innovation and capacity development of the younger generation in realizing a sustainable future.
