On Thursday, November 9, 2023, the Agricultural Extension and Communication Study Program, which is under the auspices of the Department of Agricultural Socioeconomics, Faculty of Agriculture UGM, carried out a community service activity entitled “Training on Making Gembus Tempe Chips from Tofu Waste.” This event was held in Pacarejo, Semanu, Gunung Kidul, and was attended by representatives of the Prima Melati Sambirejo Village group and KWT Ngudi Lestari Ngrombol 2 Karangmojo.

This community service activity was carried out to provide practical knowledge to the public regarding using tofu waste to make economically valuable products, such as tempe gembus chips. This activity is not just a form of contribution from the Agricultural Extension and Communication Study Program to the community but also a commitment to local economic empowerment.

One of the exciting things about this activity was the presence of Mrs. Supriyati, a producer of gembus tempe chips who has succeeded in turning tofu waste into a product in demand in Semanu, Gunung Kidul. He was invited as a speaker to share his experience and knowledge about how to make tempe gembus chips from tofu waste. In the material session, Mrs. Supriyati explained the steps for making gembus tempe chips, from the seasoning preparation to the frying stage. The participants listened attentively, showing high interest and enthusiasm for this activity.

The importance of this kind of activity is not only in line with the mission of community service but also closely related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Utilizing tofu waste to make economically valuable products reflects the principles of a circular economy and sustainable resource management (SDG 12). Apart from that, this activity also contributes to increasing community skills and knowledge (SDG 4) and promoting inclusive economic growth (SDG 8).

Department of Agricultural Socioeconomics hopes that the knowledge provided in this activity can be valuable for participants in building and developing their respective businesses. Collaboration between universities and the community can continue to be improved to achieve sustainable and advanced development. Through activities like this, we teach and learn together to create a better society.
